Young Professionals of Greater Lowell Scholarship

The Young Professionals of Greater Lowell Scholarship (YPGL) was established to provide scholarships for the post-secondary education of boys and girls who are graduates from the Greater Lowell Area High Schools. Recipients are selected by a scholarship committee. YPGL will be awarding 2 scholarships for the 2009/2010 school year (1 young man and 1 young woman). The scholarship committee considers character, scholastic and other achievements, intelligence, aptitude and the promise of a successful completion of an applicant’s course of studies, among other considerations.

The following are a list of qualifications as well as information required so that we may have all of the necessary data to be considered by the committee.

  • Completion of YPGL application
  • Transcript of your grades for the last scholastic year
  • Resume detailing your extracurricular work and community involvement activities
  • Essay of 300 words or less responding to the specified Mission Statement listed on the attached application
  • Must be attending a 2 or 4 year college/university with verification of acceptance (when applicable)
  • Attach 2 letters of recommendations
  • Student should be within top 30% of class (rank)

2008/2009 YPGL Scholarship Recipients

Congratulations to Michael Cooney and Cara Haley, the recipients of this year's YPGL Scholarship.

Michael Cooney graduated 3rd out of 295 graduating seniors from Tewksbury Memorial HS. He has been accepted and will be attending Tufts University with an intended major in Biology. Michael is a well rounded student, receiving numerous academic honors throughout his high school career as well as running Winter, Spring and Cross Country Track with Varsity letters in all three. He was the Captain of the Spring Track team is Senior year. Michael was also active in the community volunteering at RARA (Remarkable, Active, Resilient Adults of Greater Lowell) and D'Youville Senior Care. For employment Mike referee-ed Youth Hockey duing the 4 years of HS as well as tutoring Math with upper elementary students and Freshmen.

Cara Haley graduated 8th out of 83 graduating seniors from Lowell Catholic HS maintaining a cummulative GPA of 3.85. She has been accepted at numerous colleges/universities, however will be attending Hope College with an intended major in English. Cara has a strong dedication to her community by volunteering at Ironstone Farms and the Leadership Development Program (training with able bodied and special need campers at Oceanwood Camp) as well as volunteering in the arts by perforiming piano, dance and visual arts. Cara is also active in her Church working as a Sunday School assistant, directing the annual Christmas play and music ministry.
